Conservation of biodiversity in the mountains of Central Asia

Since the spring of 2020, the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources has begun transferring the lands of national parks to private companies for long-term use for up to 49 years to develop tourism. The idea is to foster sustainable tourism in the country, but the adopted approaches do not correspond to its fundamental principles.

A joint project of the Socio-Ecological Fund and the initiative group "Kok-Zhailau" was developed to solve this problem. Within its framework, it is planned to prepare a proposal for a conceptual vision of ecotourism.

In terms of biodiversity, the project will focus on improving legislation and its enforcement in relation to touristic activities in specially protected natural areas and developing and promoting alternatives to ecotourism and sustainable tourism instead of the government's proposed model of mass tourism.
